Metallurgical Engineering Jobs Off Shoring - How to Cope

Many companies in developed countries are off shoring their high paying metallurgical engineering jobs to overseas locations in developing countries. While this may be of tremendous business advantage to the companies, it puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the people that held these metallurgical engineering jobs many of which pay very well. In this day and age of globalization, one needs to be prepared to cope with such an off shoring phenomena that is rampant in industry. If you wait until the event takes place, it is usually too late and the time to recover from such a shock can be longer than otherwise.

The best way to cope with such a possibility is to develop a strategic plan. As is commonly said, the difference between success and failure is usually attributable to poor planning or in limiting cases, no planning. In this article, we will detail one method by which this can be accomplished.

In the case of metallurgical engineering jobs, one method of invoking such planning involves trying to get into industries that are in the service business rather than in the fabricating and production businesses. Service industries that provide a service to a large segment of the market that demands immediate attention are generally more difficult to be sent overseas thereby making off shoring a more complicated issue. If you are involved in such an industry, then you can protect yourself rather well. If you are not involved in such a business, then start making plans to get employed by such companies.

An example may make this clear. If you are employed in a factory that makes parts for automobiles, there is a high probability that the entire factory could be sent off shore to take advantage of cheap labor. However, if you switch and find employment with a company that applies thermal spray coatings as the last operation prior to assembly in a jet engine plant, chances are slim that the company will uproot and move abroad. It is imperative therefore that you develop the necessary skills and knowledge base to be a sought after candidate by such companies that are less likely to move. That is where the planning process needs to start.
This may involve taking more courses at local universities; reading a lot of articles related to the subject matter; attending conferences and seminars in the area and start networking with individuals in the chosen field. All this will take time and effort. But in the end, the investment will pay off through long term job security.
