Choosing the Correct Model Aircraft Engine

How to choose the correct model aircraft engine? We will discuss a few options to make it easier for you to decide.

The first question that most people ask is, "Should I buy a gas or an electric model aircraft engine?" To answer that you need to decide what your needs are. How big a model will you be flying? If you are flying a light model of between 1 to 2 kilograms, an electric model aircraft engine will work fine. If you prefer the noise made by a gas, then a gas engine may suit you better.
Next of course it the price consideration. Gas can be quite a costly option and generally more expensive to run. An electric engine can be purchased for just a few dollars and with the advancements made it the last few years they are becoming more and more efficient.

The disadvantage of gas is the fact that it can be very messy. The noise that gas model aircraft engines makes may be impressive to the pilot but others usually find it annoying. A gas engine needs a special tool to start it if you do not want to lose your finger in the process. An electric RC aircraft engine on the other hand, starts easily and at the touch of a button.

A lot of people are asking "What is the future trend, towards gas aircraft engines or towards electric?"If we compare running costs of an electric aircraft engine versus a gas one, there is not too much in it at this stage although I think electric will continue to become cheaper and cheaper to run as more and more advancements are made in the future.

Captain Des Werner is an Airline Pilot with many thousands of flying hours. As an Author and experienced pilot, he is at the forefront to provide solutions to cost effective ways of building strong RC model aircraft.
